Hot stone massage is different than the better known traditional full body massage or a therapeutic massage in that it requires a more gentle touch and in some cases the therapist may not even touch you, other then to position the hot stones.
The heat in the stones is effective in enabling the muscles to loosen up and relax the stiff muscles. Hot stone massage helps the client relax and allows better sleep. It’s really hard to get a good quality sleep when you’re over fatigued. With the relaxation you get from this therapy, it makes it easier for you to doze off into a deep sleep which your body needs to recuperate from daily fatigue. This is why people who have Insomnia are often advised to have a hot stone massage.
A massage of any type can give you a happy feeling, usually because you are in such a warm relaxed space. A calming and soothing massage can do wonders in giving you an emotional boost, leaving you with a happier and more positive outlook in life.
Taking a break from work and from life is truly a necessity that most people overlook and take for granted. No, you don’t need to fly and have a vacation every once a week. Just being able to give yourself some down time to unwind and relax is a healthy habit. You need to think about your total wellness and set aside some time to pamper yourself. If you are happier and healthier, you can better serve the needs of loved ones. So not only can pampering yourself with a hot stone massage improve your life, it could benefit others that are close to you as well.
There are differing opinions but for my own personal choice when doing hot stone massage, I like to use natural materials. My number one choice for a massage oil is rice oil. In fact I go a step farther with the rice, I even fill bags with rice to hold the stones in place.
Choosing the correct size and type of stones is extremely important in hot stone massage. The size of stone I select for hot stone therapy range from very small for doing toe work to large for working on the back. I prefer the smooth basalt stones. I prefer very smooth river stones for warming and loosening the muscles.
I always test the heat of the stones with my client so that the heat does not exceed the clients comfort level and I set the mood in the room by using soft lighting and music to help each client relax.
